i'm doing it for the thrill

dear diary,

If Santigold's LES Artistes summed up my 2008 tour, this track would be the one that sums up my recent 2009 tour. So kick ass, this remix is.

We can fight our desires
But when we start making fires
We get ever so hot
Whether we like it or not
They say we can love who we trust
But what is love without lust?
Two hearts with accurate devotions
And what are feelings without emotions?

I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill
Oh I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand

I hang my hopes out on the line
Will they be ready for you in time
If you leave them out too long
They'll be withered by the sun
Full stops and exclamation marks
My words stumble before I start
How far can you send emotions?
Can this bridge cross the ocean?

I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill
Oh I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand

Let's go to war
To make peace
Let's be cold
To create heat
I hope in darkness
We can see
And you're not blinded by the light from me

I'm going in for the kill
I'm doing it for a thrill

Oh I'm hoping you'll understand
And not let go of my hand

there she goes again

dear diary,

There is a difference between thinking 'my life sucks' and thinking 'my life could be better'. If I thought my life sucked straight out, I would whine all day and do nothing about it. But even tho my life doesn't suck (so to speak), I still whine all day because I believe it can be way better and it's up to me to do something about it. I choose the people I whine about it to, and you were one of them because i thought you would understand. I thought you would know how to tell me that I have what it takes and that I can - even if you didn't think so. What i didn't know was that you didn't know me well enough and i didn't know you well enough either to think you'd be so judgmental. Expressing myself has been something I had to learn to do because I didn't grow up in an environment that required much of it. And as a songwriter, I think it's good to get all the anger and frustrations out because nobody wants to listen to happy love songs all day long. People love angry bitches. From when i was very young, I've always wanted to live a life that pushes boundaries. I have always been a dreamer, but I'd also like to believe that I'm a do-er too. But pushing boundaries isn't an easy thing. It is first and foremost all about having the correct mindset and gaining enough courage to get out there and fucking do it. And in order to have that sort of courage, you need the support from the people who matter. Although, sometimes, not having the support could also push you into wanting to prove them wrong. I would say that I'm blessed to have both, and it works for me. I used to think being able to keep your thoughts to yourself makes you a hero. But it takes more guts to have your feelings out there - yet people would see it as being weak. Oprah's made a fortune from making people talk. And people who watch it watch it because they wish they can talk their problems out too, but they don't. They don't because they're afraid of being judged. But if you were invited by Oprah to talk about it to a gazillion people, suddenly it feels almost glamorous to do so. And so yeah, there is a difference between whining because I want you to feel sorry for me, and whining because I want you to give me some support. If sorry was what I wanted, I would've just whined to my neighbour's cat. I wouldnt've needed you for that.

meena

dear diary,

I could never bring myself to read an autobiography from cover to cover - not even madonna's. It's normally something i would keep and flip randomly when I would like to be quickly inspired. But i read this one, from cover to cover, because i felt i can somehow relate to her in more ways than one. I understand the drive she had in sacrificing so many areas of her personal life in order to do what she felt she had been destined to fulfill in her short life.

She idolized Joan of Arc, who said;
"Don't think I haven't been afraid. I was afraid all the time, from the very beginning, which is nobody's business but mine. You get through because you think deeper, imagine more, and get over your fear first."

From what i've read, she seemed so focused and determined with what she wanted for the Afghan women that the things she did in order to get themselves heard were some of which would have me pee in my pants. It's a miracle she even survived to see 30.

What's even more surprising is that she looks so motherly and harmless! So, no, you don't need to shave your head, grow armpit hair and dress like a man to have the balls of one. You legend, you.

SUTASI - Southeast Asia EP1

dear diary,

The first few episodes from Sutasi have now been uploaded on Youtube. This was recorded last year, sometime in between my being in London and touring europe where I was flown down to Singapore for a week and met some very talented bunch from across Asia, the production crew and of course Eugene, the crazy monkey who also happens to be the host.

I come right after Asian Embassy on this one, havent seen all of it as yet, but already I am cringing listening to myself talk. And, I'm aware my make up's making me look like death. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

If, after watching for some strange reason you wanna vote for me go to sutasi.com! and maybe i'll give you a kiss and some cookies :)

i'll never return

dear diary,

i'm half-way through reading an autobiography on Meena, an Afghan heroine who led a feminist movement called RAWA. And gosh, this woman knew no fear. Here's a poem she wrote;

I'm the woman who has awoken
I've arisen and become a tempest through the ashes of my burnt children
I've arisen from the rivulets of my brother's blood
My nation's wrath has empowered me
My ruined and burnt villages fill me with hatred against the enemy
Oh compatriot, no longer regard me weak and incapable,
My voice has mingled with thousands of arisen women
My fists are clenched with fists of thousands compatriots
To break all these sufferings all these fetters of slavery.
I'm the woman who has awoken,
I've found my path and will never return.

The Ripple Effect reviews 'I Am Glam'

dear diary,

Todd from The Ripple Effect writes a review on 'I Am Glam';

"Perhaps not something that you'd expect to be reviewed on the Ripple, but then we always told you there were no barriers to our mad search for music, as long as it entertains us. And that's exactly what this one does. This time coming from Kuala Lumpur, Ze (pronounced Zay) teamed up with Belgian producer Ruben Debusschere to create a short-strapped handbag worth of radiant trashy dance music. Or as Ze says herself, she is one loud and bitchy electropop singer. And trust me, what she says is true. "I Am Glam," is her self-penned piece-de-resistance, an absolute gutter-fest of the trashiest electropop drum and bass you'll put your eye shadow on to. Looping Yaz-style synths, programmed beats, and then there's Ze, wailing on in her raving bitchfest that "I am what I am/Glam is what I am." And it's her attitude that makes the song work and the whole thing so endearing. Rather than coo like some puffed up diva, Ze belts the song out with so much passion and conviction, it's almost punk. And that's the way I'll leave it. Absolute trashy punky electropop, guaranteed to get the bodies moving on the dancefloor, the boys bouncing under the strobe lights, and girls fighting over their Gucci bags. Just what the doctor ordered to get the party started."

Spot on! :)
